A Portrait (for Marisa)

Jennifer Paige©2000

Today, I painted your portrait

So I could look at your distant face

     The salt of my tears

     Lifted all color away

You were my favorite masterpiece,

My friend,

     Only whispered words remain

     A watercolor blur

All that I remember hides

Behind shadows and lights

The faded canvas of what we were

     Crumbles in my hand

Do you remember my hands

     as I remember yours?

Or recall my shining eyes

     laughing into yours?

Have you realized the love we shared

     is what we've always wanted?

Did you know my agony upon

     having to let you go?

I am missing:

     forehead kisses

     raspberry tea

     sharing secrets

     our conversations

     holding you forever...

I can still hear your heart beating.

I miss you like an ocean.
