The Promise at Elusis
Jennifer Paige©2004
(Excerpted from the longer series Entheos)
Goddess of the corn again recluse,
Reconciles her seed once more to wed.
Weeds of mourning drape, long shadows loose.
Through virgin fields new-sown, a daughter led.
Pomegranate flesh assures her fate,
Obligatory marriage of the dead.
Hades this is ordained to compensate,
While Demeter suffers not the grain to grow.
Autumnal, vernal, these are consummate.
Barren pasture, the curve of earth fallow,
West wind cools beneath the weakened sun
Six moons or more; this is our Mother's woe.
Eleusis left to pray the course will run
To seasons when Persephone is won.
