The Squirrel's Industry

Jennifer Paige©2004

leaves turn
one short week
from equinox
sap retreats to center
from whence it came
so soon
boughs of gold
red
rust
rushing around squirrels
and me
under arched
bridges of cherry
birch
maple

in this
acorn year
limbs to gravity's whim
laden
heavy with fruit
wind-wake entices
dances in jeweled crowns

flings green-nuts
pings tin roof
rolls from the edge
clatter
down
to loam-soft
ground

blanketed
sleep
dreams of oak begin

quick
the squirrel's industry
a rush before
taproots tentatively test
kernel shell
and delve the depths of earth
