Corners (for Jason)

Jennifer Paige©1997

On the corner of my mind

There is a street light

It’s halogen lamp buzzes in harmony

     With the cicadas

After the rain

On this corner, where rain becomes soft

     Percussion

I can hear the trees whisper

     Words I cannot say

Nigh oozes in

     Overtaking the sun

     Smother the sky

     With inky black and diamonds

And the waning gibbous of an August moon

You showed up later than I thought you would

I guess you never really gave a time

You walked with your hands buried deep in the pockets

     Of your pants

And your eyes towards the ground

I wonder what you’re thinking

     In your silence

I wonder who you are

     Who I am

     How we got lost

When we had been side by side for so long

Things you said and did to me

     Were perfect for a while

Your eyes and smile

Held a world once barren to my sight

Yet are now deserted, vacant, cold

     How did we change?

When we were there next to one and other

     The entire time?
