Downpour

Jennifer Paige©1997

Slated drain sucks in the waterfalls

     From this morning’s rain

Showers in May bring what?

     June flowers?

     Metal towers?

     Mortal powers?

I’m gray like this city today

     And wet

Careful not to catch the cold

     Like mama said

But the rain feels good on my face

     The huge, ice drop

     Splatter

     Smudge my mascara

    Tiny black tears

     From my eyes

My damp hair hangs stringy

Drops slide down my coat

My boots are cold on the sidewalk

     Wet in the puddles

     Dry beneath my pant-leg

Sky becomes water

Water becomes sky

And I am always alone

     In the rain

     No matter water or sunshine

Wet or dry

I walk solitary

Eternally
