Long Lost Eve

Jennifer Paige©1997

Let me sleep

In you tear-swollen eyes

In the deep blue oceans there

Never to slip away

A distance as great

     As yours

Makes a precious moment past

     The ghosts of memory

Tourmaline voices shimmer

     Your, mine, hers

But when she spoke, I never heard

     Her voice of reason

Only yours and mine

     Those two lovesick sounds

     Moaning incoherently

     We really should have listened—

So here we are again

The Fates seem to love us so

     When we’re together

I find you sleeping, weeping

     In this nightmare I caused

You without her, me without you

     She without me

This bitter triangle

Sharp razor along my heart

Too cold to bleed

There is no more blood to shed

As it drained from me at the sight of you

But I will not cry

Tears wasted on pain only

     Blur my vision of you

     Distorted, Vaseline lens

Refocus, Angel,

And let me worship at your altar
