This Morning's Tree

Jennifer Paige©1997

Morning after snowfall

In the sun’s first rays of light

Water becomes diamonds

On skin so wet and black

Against pink mountains, orange sky

            The tree steams

My alabaster skin disguised as probes

Reach out to touch the warm bark

The veil of mist

Light rays find my fingers in a heated kiss

            Above the breathing tree

Closer—

I feel the vapors on my cheek

They entwine themselves in my hair

I turn my head and inhale

Filling my chest with breath

The morning’s woody breath

Life from the tree enters me

            Bittersweet and hardy

To taste the sun and smell the water
