Dormant

Jennifer Paige©1998

No longer blood rushes

            Crushes

Pushes through open veins beneath the skin

No longer skin tingles

            Sizzles

            Freezes with the touch

No longer the muscles quake

            Contract

            Release in heated envy

No longer—

My side,

A vacancy

Above and below

Lips void of kiss

Eyes void of beauty

Skin void of silk

Hair void of fingers

Mouth void of tongue

            (her taste

             her strength

             her eyes—

             hazel and open

             through upturned face—

             and soft,

             she breathed into me,

             gave me heat)

Mind full of her

            Then she left

Ripped away the spring

To leave me with barren arms

            Dormant
