The Last "Good-bye?"

Jennifer Paige©1999

To never again utter that phrase seems but a dream—

The distant cloud on the horizon, as you said—

The distance on land is nothing

Compared to this mileage of months

And the wear of one thousand “good-byes” on the heart

From now until that last; unforeseeable.

How much better it will be to say

            “See you tonight…”

“See you in a few hours…”

            “See you in the morning…”

Or will even those short spans become agony

As these few short days have?

I should be reasonable and say, no

Say I will look upon this and laugh, in time.

But somehow my heart tells me it’s not so,

That soon a similar poem will

            Manifest upon these pages

When even in you arms asleep

(When dreams of you only make me miss you more)

Wondering when those few feet of inches will

            Separate us no longer
