Midsummer Miracles

Jennifer Paige©1999

My daily prayers for rain finally answered

With relief from the scorching sun of summer.

Parched Earth reaches out like a dog with greedy tongue

To lap up the cool water,

Refreshed in the wash of sky.

The drunken wind whispers

            A name upon the breeze.

Sing it to me—

My body drawn outside with caresses

            Of rain and wind,

            Stirring a dance in me.

Awash in the purple-gray above

            Singing, intoxicated,

Spinning and reveling in the midsummer miracle.

My spirit is free.

I am rejuvenated,

Resurrected from the desert landscape, days gone by,

Left to wander-dance somewhere between

            Nature’s glory

And the sound of your name.
