The Occurrence at DePoe Bay (Devil's Punch Bowl)

Vs1   Remembering the stars that night reflected in your eyes

I can see them, they still haunt me, I still see them shine

You would not take my hand where the ocean kissed the land

With out feet sinking, my heart sinking, sinking in the sand

I led you high above the tide to the hidden ledge in the cliffside

Where you watched the gulls fly, soar, fall, and glide, lowered your head and sighed

Then you spoke of your new lover

And your desire for her was like no other

The moon rose like a soul from the water

And I knew there would never be another,

                   Another night like this

Vs2     From within our "special" place I watched as waves erased

All our footprints, leaving no trace, from the beaches face

As you spoke into the wind, my fists clenched as I listened

And raging water rushed in, forsaking all we could have been, raging in again

The moon seemed to spotlight you, and my face took on a pallid hue

I said, "But I love you, you know I love you!"  You said, "I don't love you..."

You said I spoke of days we'd have no longer

And the sudden silence seemed to hover

In the moment I took to recover

I swore there'd never be another,

                  Another night like this

BENEDICTION     No, no--

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

Feed the wretch, feed the wretch,

Feed the wretch into the sea

REFRAIN     And I whispered a prayer to the water

As it pulled you our deeper and farther

Prayed this deed would never be discovered

So there would never need to be another,

                     Another night like this

                     Another night like this
